Also, have you ever heard of Herbert Brun? He’s an obscure German composer, but he has some really interesting ideas about language and music.

Children International is primarily a sponsorship organization, so you give some money and then get updates and cards from a little brown child who can now go to school. Nothing so wrong with that, except those kids are out there on the corner getting paid by the number of people they sign up. That bothers me. It’s essentially reducing the kids on the other side of the world into a commodity for the kids on this side of the world. There are better organizations to give to if you want to help kids and better ways for the American kids to make money than try to sell us on suffering brown children. I also simply dislike how much of their organizational expenses go toward fundraising, roughly 11%. Save The Children, who do great work and can hook you up with letters from poor kids too, if that’s what you’re into, spends about 5% on fundraising. So they can spend more on the kids’ needy asses and everyone they know.
