In what could be called a brief "research phase" for this Boston Pops piece, I have been looking into a lot of Colin McPhee's music. It seems as if this piece is turning into a little homage to McPhee, who is one of the most interesting composers I can think of. If you have the time, look at this flash-biography from UCLA's ethnomusicography center. I am entirely convinced that gay Canadians are going to run this whole show someday.
