Regarding ‘close reading’ music writing…. Just before reading your
post above I was reading a nicely done, super informal example of a
writer on the playing of Walt Dickerson:

I think the air hockey metaphor is the key – much ‘close reading’
music writing ends up too technical, or merely descriptive. The
Dickerson passage simply makes me want to hear the music. I think
that’s the highest praise there is for a piece of music writing.
